I predict a riot - and am regretting wearing a cravat!

posted Wednesday, 1 April 2009
So, today on Epsom Station, one can see what others look like at the weekend as I didn’t spot a single suit!  Today we have rioting in the City (possibly) and companies have advised their employees to “dress down” and the people of Epsom travelling up to London have done just that.  I am wearing an old pair of jeans, a vest, a hoodie, carrying a spirit level in one hand and The Sun (the paper which supports our rioters) in the other and a rolled up Wild Woodbine perched precariously on the side of my mouth (no one’s going to tell me about a smoking ban!!).  Many people believe that “dress down” means wearing either red or mustard coloured cords (chinos have been advised not to be worn), outrageously pink shirt (with double cuffs and regimental cuff-links) and a cravat which doesn’t at all say, “I work in the City!”  However, what these disillusioned, ill-dressed, colour-blind people don’t realise is that although they may not have a suit on, reading the Financial Times¸ checking their BlackBerry and forgetting all the elocution lessons they learned at Harrow might have them strapped to a railing later on.  And the rioters are unlikely to let them use their BlackBerries, ChuckBerries, HalleBerries or any bleedin’ Berries for that matter.  I shall be reporting (from the ostensible safety of my 4th floor office) on the riot via Twitter http://twitter.com/Mickyrichards and listening to lots of Mahler on my I-Touch pretending it’s not really happening. What would Emily Pankhurst have said?
