Tonight is National Moth Night. Lepidopterists (people with a fear of any animal with spots) will be burning in lights in 100 sites all over Britain. They are hoping to attract moths not seen in this country since 1931. Not wishing to be a killjoy, the average age of a moth is slightly less than 74 years. If the moths don’t turn up the people attending the 100 moth-ins will simply go and chew on a set of curtains. A spokesman stated that butterflies are more visible than moths. The reason is, I believe, is butterflies are innocently butterflying from petal to petal in your garden, while your average moth is tucking into a dinner comprising mostly of your best cashmere jumper.
